Kahuzi Biega National Park
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is located close to Bukavu town East of the Democratic Republic of Congo along the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. The park was named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega that are situated within the park covering and area of 6,000 kms2 with both mountainous and lowland terrain.
Activities in the park
Eastern Lowland Gorilla trekking
Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking is the most prominently carried out activity in the park and this gives you an opportunity to trek and watch the Eastern Lowland Gorillas in their natural vegetation habitat. You reach the headquarters where you are briefed on conduct around the Gorillas then later in allocated groups of 8 with a park ranger guide, enter the forest to trek the Gorillas for 3-5 hours looking for them along the trails then after you meet the Gorillas and in an hour stay in their presence taking photos to keep.
Volcano Hiking
Kahuzi Biega is good for Hiking as you get to climb the two Mountain volcanoes in the Park i.e Mount Kahuzi and mount Biega. Along your hike, you have clear views of entire national park, wildlife and the neighboring communities and countries. You watch bamboo and subalpine vegetation as well.
Bird watching
Kahuzi Biega National Park is a perfect birders paradise as you watch many bird species here as they fly around their natural forest vegetation habitat. There are 342 bird species 42 0f that are endemic to the national park and these include the African green broad bill, yellow crested helmet-shrike, Congo peafowl and Rockefeller’s.
Nature walks
The Park offers hiking and nature Walk encounters as you transfer with a park ranger guide along the varying trails to the Tshibiti waterfalls trail where you view the three waterfalls in the park. You watch wildlife, green terrain and bird species around their natural forest vegetation habitat.
